Water Wells in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh

670+ tube wells installed for Rohingya refugees and host communities — a tubewell from $100, a deep water well from $650, with full photo and video documentation.

How much does a water well cost in Bangladesh?

A tubewell costs $100 and a deep water well costs $650, delivered and installed by Social Care in Cox's Bazar. That is the full cost — the hardware, the labour, the installation and the documentation sent back to the funding organisation.

The difference between the two is depth and the number of people served. A tubewell serves a household or a small cluster of families. A deep water well reaches a deeper, more reliable water table and serves a whole community, which matters most in the dry season and in areas where shallow groundwater is saline or contaminated.

Where we install them

Social Care has installed 670+ tube wells across Cox's Bazar — both inside the Rohingya refugee camps of Ukhiya and Teknaf and in the marginalised host communities around them. Clean water is the single most requested item in both populations, and in the camps the pressure on existing water points is constant.

Water wells as Sadaqah Jariyah

A water well is the classic Sadaqah Jariyah — ongoing charity that continues to earn reward for as long as people drink from it. For this reason water wells are among the most requested projects by the charities we work with, and among the easiest for a charity to raise funds for, because a donor can see exactly what their money built.

On request we install a plaque naming the donor or the person the well is dedicated to, which many partner organisations offer to their own donors.

What a funding organisation receives

  • Dated photographs of the completed well, including the plaque where requested
  • Video from the site on the day of handover
  • The location and the community served
  • Receipts for materials and installation

Partner organisations use this material directly in their own donor reporting, newsletters and social media.

Funding a water-well programme

Charities usually begin with a small batch — five or ten tubewells — to see our delivery and reporting, then move to a recurring programme. We can also deliver a single well if that is what a donor has funded. See how partnership works for the full process, or read our FAQ for partner organisations.
